Joseph Travis, Ph.D.
Joe Travis is the interim Dean of Arts and Sciences at Florida State University.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975 in Biology. He then attended Duke University where he received his Ph.D. in 1980 in Zoology. Continuing on, Travis completed a postdoctoral at the University of Virginia in Biology.
Travis has served on the faculty of FSU's Biological Sciences department since 1980. From 1991-1997 he was Chair of the department. In 1996, he was recognized as a Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professsor, the university's highest faculty honor. In 2000 he became the Director of the School of Computational Science and Information Technology.
Travis is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been recognized as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Miami and the University of Zurich. He was also the Vice President of the American Society of Naturalists in 1994 and the President-elect in 2004. He served as Editor of the American Naturalist from 1998-2002.
