FSU Research Foundation GAP Grant Program

The FSU Research Foundation has announced that the Spring 2014 GAP competition is now scheduled with the final presentations to be held the morning of Tuesday, May 6th, 2014. Detailed information on the Spring 2014 GAP Program, including dates and times for all GAP milestones, are included in the GAP Program Guide. Schedule of Events

  • Declare intention to participate - Friday, February 28, 2014
  • Final GAP proposals due - Friday, March 28, 2014
  • Presentation reviews - Week of April 14th
  • Final GAP Presentations - Tuesday, May 6, 2014
  • Award Decision Announced - June 13, 2014

Program Description

The FSURF GAP program is designed to support enhancements of inventions or other original works that have been disclosed to FSU. It funds projects that FSU researchers and other interested parties agree will quickly improve the odds that current research results will lead to public availability of a new product or service.

The FSU Research Foundation has allocated up to $250,000 per year for at least four years to provide grants under this program.

GAP projects should reach completion in a year or less. Funded tasks will be performed under the supervision of the proposing faculty member; but may include third party efforts within or outside the University. The Grants will be funded to meet agreed project objectives. Grant funds may be used to pay students or post doctoral fellows, or to obtain materials, services and assistance outside the university. Overhead charges should not be included in project grant requests. Strong preference will be given to projects with regular internal checkpoints, external participation, and funding requirements below $50,000.

Proposal Preparation

Before writing a proposal, seek assistance from Mr. Jack Sams, Director of Licensing in the Office of Commercialization , to identify at least one outside expert to help define the market opportunities and tasks that will best improve commercial prospects for the underlying Work. Costs of this critical consultation will ordinarily be absorbed by FSURF. Results will be a key starting point for the Proposal.

Proposals, which are directed to FSURF through the Office of Commercialization , may be submitted at any time. They should include:

  1. FSU Standard Proposal Transmittal Form.
  2. Summary or abstract:
    • Identify the underlying invention or work disclosure, by its FSU ID, title and author/inventor(s)
    • Describe the task(s) that will resolve a problem, or establish a new opportunity for potential licensees.
    • State an objective, work plan, and expected outcome for each task.
    • Describe how these tasks advance the probability of commercial success.
  3. Status and Significance of the underlying Intellectual Property
    • Describe its significance from the viewpoint of a potential licensee
    • Describe its key advances from the present art.
    • State its current patent and licensing status; e.g., provisional application filed, CDA to Company X, federal license issued.
    • Attach a copy of the most relevant scientific publications
  4. Objectives:
    • Describe the tasks to be performed, in order of priority. The highest priority task should resolve the highest risk to licensees.
    • Provide an estimate of cost and time for each objective.
  5. Plan:
    • What method will be used to accomplish each task ( simulation, experiment, economic study)?
    • What resources are required: personnel, skills, third party services?
    • What results are expected?
    • Show dependencies in time, outcome, or resources among tasks. (Gantt chart)
  6. Related Work
    • Describe any significant and recent work or results related to this project, either academic or commercial.
  7. Key Personnel
    • Provide a brief statement of the qualifications of the key personnel and any consultants or third parties who have agreed to participate.
    • Do not include detailed CV's.
  8. Equipment and facilities
    • Describe the facilities and equipment required for the project.
    • Indicate how these will be obtained, if not readily and locally available.
  9. Other Sources of Funding
    • Identify any potential or committed sources of alternate or additional funds or collaborative efforts.
  10. Budget
    • Follow normal guidelines for FSURF budgets
    • Identify and justify external expenditures
    • Do not include indirect costs
  11. Deadline
    • Applications may be submitted at any time. Competitive reviews will occur at least twice a year.

Evaluation, Awards and Reports

Initial review and comments will be provided by the Office of Commercialization .

Competitive review and funding recommendations will be provided periodically by a committee, chaired by an FSURF Board member and including FSU faculty, staff, and outside business members. Final approval will be made by the FSU Research Foundation Board of Directors.

Once funded, the faculty member and key personnel will report project progress and accomplishments at their scheduled checkpoints.

At completion, a brief Final Report will be provided within 30 days and a brief Annual Status Report will be required for 3 years to assist in evaluating the GAP program and determining its direct and indirect benefits to FSU, including new products, new companies, new services, and new related federal or other external grants.
