Fall 2007 Intellectual Property Workshop: Building the Product Staircase
Do you have an invention and wonder what to do next? What steps are necessary to have a marketable product or service? What resources are available to assist you in ascending the product staircase?
FSU faculty and staff members are encouraged to attend the Fall 2007 IP Workshop hosted by the Office of Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization to learn more about these issues. The workshop will be held on Friday, November 16, 2007, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the University Center, Building B, 5th floor. For those coming from Innovation Park, off-campus parking is free if you use the University Center Club Visitor’s lot. Please bring your ticket stub to the workshop for validation.
The program will be divided into two parts. Part I will feature a presentation by Jack Sullivan, President and CEO of the Florida Research Consortium, on new initiatives by the State of Florida to develop technology and create new companies. Included in the session will be information on intellectual property and FSU policies. Part II will consist of a case study of a university technology that has moved up the product staircase and is positioned to become publically available. Research Compliance Issues
Research compliance begins with employee, student, and faculty awareness of relevant laws, regulations, and university requirements. The FSU Research Compliance website, http://www.research.fsu.edu/researchcompliance/index.html, offers background information on a variety of research compliance issues ranging from export control, to research misconduct and conflict of interest in research. Export controls have become a hot compliance topic in recent years, and FSU is committed to its policy of fundamental research, which is defined as research in science or engineering that does not contain any sponsor or governmental restrictions on foreign nation access, or publication restrictions on research activities or results. Any research that does contain restrictions must receive additional review and scrutiny by the Office of Research, and may not be accepted by FSU depending on the nature of the restrictions required by the research sponsor. Researchers need to be familiar with export control requirements when considering research projects that may involve particular technology or uses, and the additional compliance requirements that must be adhered to by researchers, along with the civil and criminal penalties imposed by the federal government for violations of the law.

The Important Notice details NSF's implementation of the National Science Board's motion to enhance support of transformative research at the Foundation.
