Procedure Update for Lab Animals

Sponsored Research Services has updated the policies and procedures web page found at: http://www.research.fsu.edu/contractsgrants/policypro.html to include a new section providing information on research that involves vertebrate animals.

This update is in the "procedures" section at the bottom of the above referenced page.  Of particular importance, the new section describes essential steps that principal investigators using animals must take in order to have their grant money released.  The new section also details procedures for Animal Care and Use Committee approval of animal research projects; information on animal housing and space allocation; ordering animals; budgeting for animal research; use of controlled drugs; and information on the faculty (biomedical) advisory committee that helps to insure that the animal program is responsive to the needs of the research faculty while providing the highest care for, and responsible use of animals.

Human Subjects Update

The Office for Human Research Protection, which implements the federal regulations governing the protection of research participants, encourages institutions to periodically monitor or audit research activities to insure compliance. The Vice President of Research has requested that FSU Audit Services assist the FSU Human Subjects office in periodic compliance audits of research activities. Principal Investigators are advised that beginning in February 2007, Audit Services may select research protocols to review for compliance issues, such as proper consent forms, retention of records, storage of records, and compliance with data use agreements. They may also visit principal investigators' offices to determine whether particular compliance areas have been managed as required by federal law, regulation, or as represented in specific research protocols. Please feel free to contact the FSU Human Subjects office at 644-7900 if you have any questions.

Online Resource for Research Discussions with Outside Companies Launched

In January 2007, the Office of Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization published guidelines for Confidential Disclosure Agreements, which protect discussions of unpublished research and proprietary information between faculty and outside organizations. See www.techtransfer.fsu.edu/cdas.html.

These guidelines will generally streamline negotiations with outside companies by offering terms that address the University’s policy relating issues such as export control, liability, and definitions of confidential information. For more information about this site or these types of discussions please contact Eric McNair at 644-3328.
