Climate Solutions

Spring 2021

Climate solutions, not just climate problems.

Florida is especially vulnerable from the intersection of climate-driven adversities (increased hurricane frequency, low-elevation flooding, high incidence of heat waves) with a large population that is growing faster than the country as a whole, and is increasingly coastal. The technologies, practices, and policies needed to slow, and ultimately reverse climate change will be developed by university researchers, and implemented by our students. These climate solutions will require broad interdisciplinary perspectives, and contributions from many different areas of research.

Keynote Speaker

Chad Frischmann—Senior Director, Research & Technology, Project Drawdown

Chad Frischmann is a co-author, and the lead researcher and principal architect of the methodology and models behind the New York Times best-seller Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming (Penguin, 2017) and the Drawdown Review (February, 2020). Leading a global team of researchers, Chad designed integrated global models to assess the world’s most effective climate solutions and determine if, when, and how the world can reach “drawdown,” the point in time when the concentration of atmospheric greenhouse gases begins to decline on a year-to-year basis. As head of research and technology since Project Drawdown’s inception, Chad is a key spokesperson and coalition-builder dedicated to sharing the message and model of the Drawdown Framework to the world.

With an interdisciplinary background in public policy, human rights, sustainable development, and environmental conservation, Chad works as a systems strategist to build a new, regenerative future with cascading benefits to human and planetary well-being. He is the lead author of the paper “Drawdown’s ‘System of Solutions’ Helps to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”, and speaks and writes widely on topics linking climate solutions to global challenges that benefit people and the planet.

Collaborative Collision focuses on the individual's research background and interests. Our Research Profiles discuss each participant's expertise, and specific ways they can help, or be helped by, a collaborator.

Who attended?

Collaborative Collision: Climate Solutions featured presentations from members of the FSU and FAMU research community who have completed or are conducting research related to climate change, mitigation, and adaptation topics. Participants came from a variety of STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities disciplines, united by their interest in solving one of our most urgent crises.

The Collaborative Collision Seed Fund provides resources to catalyze the development of new interdisciplinary teams that form as a result of connections made at ORD’s Collaborative Collision events. Collaborative Collision grants are intended to allow a new team to position themselves to seek external funding for a new research initiative by demonstrating a history of successful collaboration.
